Teenage drivers in Canada

Teenage drivers

Driving licences are issued by the government of the relevant province or territory. Driving ages vary between provinces but generally the minimum age to start learning is 16 years and 17 years to drive independently.

Test

The test requirements and programmes for getting a driving licence vary from province to province but most provinces/territories use the graduated driver licencing programme for new drivers. This encourages new drivers to gain driving skills and experience gradually, normally between 12 and 20 months.

The first step is to apply for a licence. The minimum age to do this is usually 16 years but check provincial requirements with the local transport agency, as there may be variations. When applying for a licence it is normal to be asked to complete an eye test and a test about the rules of the road, traffic signs and safe driving practices.

Once the theory test is passed, a provisional license or learners permit will be awarded. It is normal for drivers to have to complete up to two road tests and meet the minimum driving age to become fully licensed.

Insurance

Car or auto insurance is compulsory across Canada. Some provinces offer a public auto insurance system, while in others it is provided privately.

Scooters and Motor-driven Cycles

Motorcycle permits are normally divided into classes. Again requirements vary slightly between provinces but the minimum age to hold a motorcycle or scooter driving license is usually 16 years. See the Youth Canada website and refer to the relevant province/territory for more information about provincial requirements.
